FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What happens in the free introductory call?

We talk for around 30 minutes by phone or Zoom about what has brought you here, what support you are looking for and whether working together feels like a good fit. There is no obligation to book ongoing sessions.

How long does counselling usually last?

There’s no fixed number of sessions. Some clients find just a few sessions are enough for what they need from therapy and others prefer long-term support. We can agree a starting point together and review regularly as your needs change. Sessions usually start off weekly, and may move to fortnightly or monthly as we work towards an ending.

What are your practice hours? Are they flexible?

My client hours are usually 9am-3pm, Monday to Friday. I operate a flexible calendar via Calendly. Some clients prefer the same day and time each week and others prefer to book different times around their schedule.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

I have a 48-hour cancellation and rescheduling policy. This means sessions cancelled within 48 hours of the session start time will not be refunded. Clients can reschedule their booked sessions up to 48 hours before the session start time via the link provided in the session booking confirmation email. A session that is rescheduled within 48 hours of the session start time will be cancelled and will not be refunded.

How do online and telephone sessions work?

Sessions take place via Zoom or telephone. You will need a quiet, private space where you feel safe to talk, plus a stable internet connection or phone signal. You may wish to use headphones to aid confidentiality if you are in a shared space for online sessions. In the exceptional circumstance that either of our internet connections are disrupted, we may switch to a telephone session.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Counselling and supervision are confidential, with some ethical and legal limits. For example, if you or someone else might be at risk of harm it may be necessary to seek help outside our therapeutic relationship via your emergency contact, the emergency services or another relevant agency. Supervision is an essential part of my practice and I may need to discuss anonymised aspects of our sessions with my experienced supervisor to help me best support my clients. If you have any concerns about confidentiality, please discuss this with me.

What is the difference between counselling and coaching?

Counselling is a compassioante, empathetic process that supports people to explore their trauma, problems, or difficulties, gain self-awareness, understand their needs, create boundaries, make decisions and work towards healing their emotional or psychological pain. Coaching is a results-orientated, relational process that helps people to gain insight, motivation and the confidence to make positive changes in their life or work and achieve their goals. Broadly speaking, the focus in coaching may be more on actions than feelings, and the focus in therapy may be more on feelings than actions. As a dual-qualified therapist and coach, I work with both. If you are not sure whether therapy or coaching is what you need, we can discuss this in our introductory call.

Can I bring more than one issue to counselling?

Yes. Therapy is designed to support you to explore your issues and make changes in your life. Many of our problems are interconnected and situational, so it is often helpful to bring other parts of your life into the therapy room to help you make sense of your experiences and make changes.

Can you help if I am not sure I am in perimenopause?

Yes. You do not need to arrive with everything named or diagnosed. Therapy can help you make sense of symptoms, uncertainty and the impact on your mood, work, relationships and sense of self.

Can I be referred by my GP, an EAP/insurance provider or my employer/organisation?

Most clients self-refer by getting in touch directly but I do also work with some organisations who arrange counselling for their employeesand some EAPs. If your therapy is being funded by your employer or insurance provider, please check with them about the process for referral before arranging an introductory call.
